Before you head off to college and choose a major know this. There are no safe jobs anymore, there are no fallback professions. Career paths and industries are dropping like flies, and things change so quickly it’s a full time job to simply keep up. The professions that do survive are full of superstars at the peak of their game. If you want to register on the scale of competency, you’d better be ready to take everything a notch up, year after year.
There is only one way to stay sane and be able to excel every year. Doing what you love. That premise has been beaten to death, but it is more important than ever.
If you are under 50 (+?), the world is now separated into two camps, those who followed their dreams and those who didn’t. Society specifically pushes you to take the path you were meant to choose or to not. Summit or plummet. The stakes have never been higher.
The level of competency in all industries is so high that there are no fall back careers anymore. Even the old safe jobs are changing, doctors and lawyers are perusing second acts, PhD’s are waiting tables. The one thing that hasn’t changed is the failures and successes of following your dreams. If none of the traditional choices are a sure thing, then you might as well choose the path with heart.
You’d rather fail at a dream, than succeed at mediocrity. Take risks and keep your eyes open. There are infinite paths that are yet to be discovered, and you are as qualified as anyone to explore them.
Dream, go forward, do good work, be kind, listen, focus, repeat.
